The 32-year-old director says it was tough for him to kill off the black-market arms dealer gangster because he 'really did love the character.'

AceShowbiz - Ryan Coogler regrets killing off a character from his Marvel superhero movie Black Panther.

The director of the record-breaking movie, starring Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa and Michael B. Jordan as villain Erik Killmonger, voiced his concerns over disposing of Ulysses Klaue, played by Andy Serkis, in the film.

During Black Panther, the weapons trader joined forces with Killmonger, in an effort to steal more of the precious metal Vibranium. He was then captured by T'Challa, before being betrayed and murdered by Killmonger as he made a bloody bid for the throne of Wakanda.

And in a recent interview with the Toronto Sun, Coogler admitted he isn't sure it was the best decision to kill off the black market gangster.

"I like Klaue," he said. "I was bugged by having to do that. It's tough when you have to kill characters off and I really did love that character. I love Andy, he's a lovely person. But again, it's one of those things where when you've got so many people in a movie, some of them have to go.

"Klaue in this movie, he's just having a good time. Every scene he's in, he's walking in like it's the best day of his life. He's got a swagger to him that's interesting and for me it was cool to see Andy act like that. It was a real pleasure," Coogler added.

Despite his regret over killing off characters he loves, the filmmaker recently revealed he's interested in a a Black Panther spin-off movie that concentrates solely on the female warriors.

"There's a whole section of the film where T'Challa is out of the movie and you're just following the women," he said at the Cannes Film Festival. "That's one of my favourite parts of the movie when I watched it, and I didn't expect that. That part of the movie, you feel like you're watching something fresh and new.

"That part of it was exciting. We have these actresses who could easily carry their own movie. Some of them have before. We were so fortunate. I would watch a movie with them!" he said.
