The actor and filmmaker adds that being high on marijuana helped him calm down when he suffered the heart attack.

AceShowbiz - Kevin Smith is certain smoking marijuana just hours before his heart attack saved his life. The actor and filmmaker suffered a massive heart attack caused by a total blockage of the left anterior descending artery following a comedy show gig in Glendale, California in February and was rushed to a nearby hospital for surgery.

Kevin has since recovered from his health scare and shared during an appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" on Tuesday night, May 1 some details of the medical emergency.

"They got me to the hospital and they wheel me into the emergency room and the whole time I'm chill. Like, the guy said, the paramedic, he goes, 'You're being real calm, that's going to get you through this,' " he recalled. "And there's a dude behind him goes, 'That's what's going to save his life.' "

Kevin's calm demeanour was partly due to the fact that he was in total disbelief that he was ill and also to do with the marijuana he had smoked shortly before his stand-up act. However, the Clerks star wasn't able to convince medics of his theory.

"I said, 'Doc, honestly, I just smoked too much weed this morning. That's what this is,' " the 47-year-old said of being told that he was having a very serious heart attack. "I honestly thought I was too high. I'd smoked a bunch of weed that day because I was doing the show and then I smoked a joint right before the show and then I got off stage and all of the sudden I had a heart attack."

In addition, Kevin's doctor also advised him that being high hadn't impacted his health, and in reality, may have been a factor in keeping him alive. "He goes, 'No, quite the opposite. That weed saved your life.' And I was like, 'Do tell! Like, what do you mean?' " he smiled. "He said, 'You kept calm. They told you [that] you were having a massive heart attack, and you remained calm the whole time, so that joint saved your life.' "

The star has lost 32 pounds (14.5 kilograms) since the heart attack and has now adopted a vegetarian diet.
