AceShowbiz - It's official! Starz has confirmed that a TV series adaptation of "John Wick", a 2014 movie starring Keanu Reeves, is currently in the works at the network. Titled "The Continental", the planned series will be set in the "John Wick" universe.
"This series is truly unlike anything else on TV," Starz President & CEO Chris Albrecht announced on Friday, January 12 at the Television Critics Association (TCA). " 'The Continental' promises to include the thunderous fight sequences and intensely staged shootouts between professional assassins and their targets that fans have come to expect in the 'John Wick' movie franchise as well as introducing some new, darkly compelling characters who inhabit this underground world."
Reeves, who makes famous the titular assassin in the critically-acclaimed movie franchise, is expected to make an appearance on the series. However, he will not star.
The upcoming series is set to center on the inner workings of the exclusive Continental Hotel which serves as a refuge for assassins. Many of the film franchise's producers, writer and director are returning for the upcoming TV series. Chris Collins ("Sons of Anarchy", "The Wire", "The Man in the High Castle") will pen the series as well as serve as showrunner. Executive producing "The Continental" are world-class creative team led by Thunder Road Pictures' Basil Iwanyk (the "John Wick" film franchise, "The Town", "Sicario"), Chad Stahelski ("John Wick", "John Wick: Chapter 2") and Derek Kolstad, "John Wick" franchise's screenwriter.
Reeves will also executive produce the series alongside David Leitch ("John Wick", "Deadpool 2"). Stahelski is tapped to serve behind the lens for the first episode.
The "John Wick" franchise has grossed almost $300 million worldwide at the box office. The third movie, "John Wick 3", is slated to arrive in 2019.
