AceShowbiz - The first full trailer for "Annihilation" has been released by Paramount Pictures for fans' viewing pleasure. The approximately two-and-a-half-minute video gives fans an insight into Natalie Portman's biologist character's battle to save her husband, played by Oscar Isaac, who is "extremely ill" from an unknown attack.
Portman's character, named Lena, can be seen putting her name forward for an expedition into an environmental disaster zone in an attempt to find out what happened to her husband after he disappeared mysteriously while on a mission on the other side of what is simply called "the shimmer." Along with her team, she passes the shimmering wall into Area X, where she encounters a lot of beautiful, but deathly-looking plants and animals.
One scene finds Lena and her team being attacked by an unknown mutant-like creature in a lakeside house which seems to be occupied. As they continue their investigation, a lot of unpleasant things happen, until they learn about something that's "destroying everything." But Lena hints at something more dangerous as she says, "It's not destroying. It's making something new."
"Annihilation" is coming to theaters across the nation on February 23, 2018. Based on Jeff VanderMeer's best-selling book of the same name, the sci-fi thriller is written and directed by Alex Garland, whose directorial debut "Ex Machina" grossed $36 million worldwide against its budget of $15 million and received critical acclaim.
The film follows a team of four (a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist and a surveyor) who is set out into a place known as Area X. The area is abandoned and cut off from the rest of civilization. They are the 12th expedition. The other expeditions have been fraught with disappearances, suicides, aggressive cancers and mental trauma.
Starring opposite Portman and Isaac are Jennifer Jason Leigh as the Psychologist, Gina Rodriguez as the Anthropologist named Anya Thorensen, Tessa Thompson as the Surveyor and Tuva Novotny as the Linguist. Other supporting cast members include David Gyasi, Sonoya Mizuno and Crystal Clarke.
