Netflix has picked up "The Eddy", a musical TV series set in Paris helmed by "Whiplash" and "La La Land" writer/director Damien Chazelle. The Oscar-winning director directs two episodes of the eight-part series, as well as serves as executive producer.

The upcoming series is penned by Jack Thorne, the five-time BAFTA Award-winning writer of "National Treasure" and "This Is England". Glen Ballard, the six-time Grammy Award-winning music composer and producer of Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill" and Michael Jackson's "Bad", provides the original score for the series. Also set to executive produce the series is Emmy-winning producer Alan Poul ("Six Feet Under", "The Newsroom").

"The Eddy" is set in contemporary multicultural Paris. The musical-themed drama revolves around a club, with its owner and the house band trying to cope with "the volatile city that surrounds them."

As it will be filmed in France, the series is expected to feature dialogue in French, English and Arabic. It is part of Netflix's ongoing efforts to reach a global audience and internationalize its content following "The Crown" and upcoming "Dark". The series will also feature French actors, crew members and possibly French directors to helm some episodes.

"I've always dreamed of shooting in Paris, so I'm doubly excited to be teaming up with Jack, Glen and Alan on this story, and thrilled that we have found a home for it at Netflix," Chazelle says.

Erik Barmack, Netflix's VP of international originals, adds "We couldn't be happier that he will be shooting 'The Eddy' in France and that we will bring this bold, global and multilingual series to our members around the world." Barmack goes on revealing that in terms of atmosphere and tone, "The Eddy" will fall "somewhere in between" movies "Whiplash" and "La La Land".
