Unsurprisingly, the second installment of the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' movie series sits at the first place at the box office, nabbing a spectacular $146.5M in its first weekend.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" unsurprisingly dominated the box office in its debut weekend. The sequel, which saw the returns of Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista and Michael Rooker, nabbed a massive $146.5 million domestically.
In addition, the sequel gained $285 million overseas. The quirky superhero film earned $48.5 million in China alone, becoming the fourth largest opening in the country to date. So far, "Vol. 2" successfully nabbed $441 million globally.
The movie follows the continuation of the Guardians' adventure as well as offers a deeper look at Peter Quill's (Pratt) parentage. 56 percent of the ticket buyers were male. 22 percent of them were 25 years old or younger, whereas 72 percent of them were adults. Only 9 percent of the ticket buyers were teenagers.
On Saturday, May 6, director James Gunn took to his Facebook account to write a heartfelt message for fans. He said that while he did get distracted by the numbers, it wasn't what mattered to him. "I would be lying if I said I don't get distracted by the numbers. The first thing I do in the morning is roll over in bed and check my phone for the morning box office reports. But, in the end, it’s not what matters to me," wrote Gunn.
He added, "I haven't worked two and a half years just to watch a string of numbers getting higher. I work because I like telling stories. I work because I love the relationships I have with my collaborators. And I do it because I like connecting with people, and the easiest way I know how to do that is through filmmaking."
Meanwhile, "The Fate of the Furious" dropped to No. 2 after topping box office three weeks in a row, gaining $8.6 million. Fox's animation "The Boss Baby" sat on the third place of the chart with $6 million, whereas "How to Be a Latin Lover" sat on No. 4, earning $5.1 million.
Rounding out the top five was "Beauty and the Beast (2017)". The blockbuster nabbed $5 million domestically.
