'The Boss Baby' gains $50.2 million in its first weekend thanks to Alec Baldwin's star power, while 'Ghost in the Shell' only opens with $18.7 million.

Fox/Dreamworks animation "The Boss Baby" had a pretty good start in its first weekend at North American box office. The family comedy starring Alec Baldwin topped the chart by gaining $50.2 million, defeating blockbuster "Beauty and the Beast (2017)", which dropped to No. 2 in its third weekend.
"The Boss Baby" was advantaged by strong marketing campaign, not to mention Baldwin's charm as the lead voice actor. His star power has been shining thanks to his Donald Trump impersonations on "Saturday Night Live".
"Beauty and the Beast" became a runner-up by earning $45.4 million in North America. So far, Disney's live-action movie has gained a domestic total of $396.5 million since its opening weekend. In addition, the movie starring Emma Watson earned $67 million in international territories, bringing its global cume to over $886 million.
Meanwhile, Scarlett Johansson-starring "Ghost in the Shell" didn't make a very good start. The movie adapted from Masamune Shirow's manga only gained $18.7 million domestically. For months, the film has been dubbed whitewashing due to Johansson's portrayal of Major, who is a Japanese in the original manga. As for ratings, the movie got a B from CinemaScore.
"Power Rangers" sat on the fourth place at box office by gaining $14.2 million. Rounding out the top five was "Kong: Skull Island", which gained $8.6 million domestically.
