Warner Bros. is reportedly in early talks with the 'Hacksaw Ridge' director to helm the sequel to the supervillain team-up movie.

AceShowbiz - Warner Bros. has begun the search to find a director for the sequel to box office hit "Suicide Squad". As David Ayer, who directed the first movie, is now developing "Gotham City Sirens", Academy Award nominee Mel Gibson is reportedly being courted by the studio to helm the sequel.

Gibson is currently in early talks with the studio. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he is acquainting himself with the sequel material. However, no official offer and commitment are confirmed as of now.

Gibson was in a slump after his infamous DUI scandal in early 2000s as well as his anti-Semitic remarks which made him lose his studio work. The backlash also made Warner Bros. unceremoniously drop him from his cameo role in "The Hangover Part II". However, the "Braveheart" star manages to rise from the slump with "Hacksaw Ridge" which nabbed six Oscar nominations, including one for himself for best director category. "Hacksaw Ridge" has grossed $164 million in worldwide box office to date.

Besides Gibson, Warner Bros. reportedly has other names in the list of potential helmer for DC's unruly band of thugs movie. According to Variety, the studio may have met or is planning to meet Ruben Fleischer ("Zombieland"), Daniel Espinosa ("Safe House") and Jonathan Levine ("Warm Bodies"). Although Warner Bros. hasn't released any official comment yet, insiders claim the list could grow and currently there is no frontrunner among them.

"Suicide Squad" follows a group of villains, consisting of Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc, who are forced to utilize their power to help the government in exchange for lighter sentences. Starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto, the movie grossed $745 million worldwide, including $325 million in domestic box office.
