The original film was directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey who was also among the cast members along with Amy Poehler. It revolves around a teenage girl who struggles to navigate high school in the States after 15 years with her family in Africa.

The musical is adapted by Fey with her composer husband Jeff Richmond and lyricist Nell Benjamin. Tony winner Casey Nicholaw is attached to direct the project. The original producer Lorne Michaels will be involved in the musical as well. No cast members are announced.
