Frank Ocean Explains Why He Did Not Submit His Albums for Grammys

The 'Novacane' hitmaker snubs the Recording Academy because he feels the organization didn't represent his people.

Frank Ocean gave a rare interview with New York Times. He confirmed that he did not submit any of his new albums for Grammys and explained why. Noting that only a few black people ever won Album of the Year, he said he snubbed the organization as a protest.

"That institution certainly has nostalgic importance," the 29-year-old musician said. "It just doesn't seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down."

"I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated," he continued. "I'd rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment for the Grammys than sit there in the audience."

Frank Ocean is not the only one calling out the Recording Academy. Kanye West has also been outspoken about the lack of diversity in the Grammy Awards. Earlier this year, the rapper threatened to boycott the organization.
