'The Good Wife' Creators Tease Returning Characters for Final Season, Welcome Spin-Off

Robert and Michelle King say private investigator Robyn Burdine and Kurt McVeigh will return before the show ends, 'but don't expect to see Kalinda.'

AceShowbiz - Following CBS' announcement during Super Bowl 50 telecast that "The Good Wife" would end with the current seventh season, showrunners Michelle and Robert King talked to reporters in a conference call on Monday, February 8. While they wouldn't share spoilers on the remaining episodes, they at least said some familiar faces would return.

Private investigator Robyn Burdine (Jess Weixler) and Kurt McVeigh (Gary Cole) are among those who will be back before the show ends, but Kalinda (Archie Panjabi) is unlikely to return. "Kalinda went off deliberately to disappear - and we're honoring that choice. It wouldn't make sense for her to come back," said Michelle.

The same goes for the deceased Will Gardner (Josh Charles). While his spirit would weigh heavily in the final nine episodes, "alas, Will Gardner's dead - which is sort of problematic," said Michelle.

Also, don't expect to see the show explaining what happens to your favorite characters in flash forward. "We're not gonna do that," Robert said, "The show was always built on the continuity of the moment." But the show will answer how Alicia's personal life will end up and where she will go next in her career.

So, will it be a happy or sad ending? "I like [finales] that end with some resonance - 'Breaking Bad', 'Six Feet Under'," shared Robert, "finales that are happy and sad at the same time." Michelle, meanwhile, liked "when the ending is surprising and inevitable at the same time."

On the possibility of making a spin-off, Michelle said, "At this point, nothing's off the table," but added, "We're not saying no to anything." Robert added, "What would be fun is to find a way to spin off a [cast member] that wasn't at the center, who we wish we had more time with. The show always centered around the Alicia character. What's appealing would be pursuing a different ensemble."

"The Good Wife" series finale will air May 8 on CBS.
