AceShowbiz - Emma Stone has closed a deal to play one of the main characters in "Battle of the Sexes", Variety learns. The Gwen Stacy of "The Amazing Spider-Man" is set to play Billie Jean King in a movie about a true-story epic tennis match.
The "Magic in the Moonlight" actress has been a frontrunner for the coveted role but her busy schedule almost forced her to let it go. At one point, "Room" star Brie Larson was even courted to replace her in the project.
"Little Miss Sunshine" duo Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris will sit behind the lens, Danny Boyle will serve as one of the producers, and Simon Beaufoy who penned Boyle's 2008 "Slumdog Millionaire" is hired to write the script.
It follows the infamous rivalry between King and late tennis star Bobby Riggs in 1973. 55-years-old Riggs came out of his retirement to challenge 29-years-old King in a game later known as "The Battle of the Sexes." Will Ferrell will play Riggs.
