After losing director Rupert Wyatt back in September, now Marvel's "Gambit (2016)" may have found a new director. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Edge of Tomorrow" director Doug Liman is in final negotiations to helm the upcoming mutant movie.

The site suggested that other names in contention for the gig were Joe Cornish, Shane Black and F. Gary Gray, but the latter decided to helm "Fast and Furious 8". If Liman really ends up directing the movie, he will join Lauren Shuler Donner, Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin and Simon Kinberg, who are tapped to produce.

Tatum is on board to portray the titular card-throwing mutant, while Lea Seydoux is up to play the film's female lead, Bella Donna Boudreaux, a childhood friend of Remy LeBeau a.k.a. Gambit. Other cast members and plot details have yet to be announced. The superhero movie is due to open in the U.S. on October 7, 2016.

Liman is no stranger to directing action movies. He helmed "The Bourne Identity" in 2002 and "Mr and Mrs Smith" in 2005. He has just wrapped the Tom Cruise's drama "Mena", which will arrive stateside on January 6, 2017.
