Legendary Pictures has moved "Kong: Skull Island" from Universal to Warner Bros. with a plan to make "Godzilla vs. Kong". Now, the plan is official as Legendary and Warner Bros. have announced that the teaming-up movie will open in the U.S. in 2020.

Besides the two giant beasts, other creatures like Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah are also expected to make appearance in the shared cinematic monster universe. "Godzilla vs. Kong", along with two other movies, will be linked by the Monarch organization introduced in 2014's "Godzilla". Those two movies are "Kong: Skull Island", which will open March 10, 2017, and "Godzilla 2", which will arrive on June 8, 2018.

According to Thomas Tull, the chairman of Legendary, "Godzilla vs. Kong" could happen because "Godzilla" got positive responses from fans. "Audiences really responded to 'Godzilla'," Tull said in a statement. "Today, I'm excited to reveal that film was only the beginning of an epic new entertainment universe. As a lifelong fan of these characters, I've always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we're pleased to be announcing that and more."

Kevin Tsujihara, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros., agreed with Tull about the performance of "Godzilla". "Working with our partners at Legendary, we enjoyed tremendous creative and commercial success with 'Godzilla'," he said. "It's great to be able to revisit these characters and help create a franchise with so many creative possibilities for filmmakers. Fans love these big, globally iconic films and it doesn't get any bigger than this."
