Justin Bieber came back stronger than ever. Following his troubled year, the Canadian heartthrob made his return to the music scene earlier this year by joining Jack U a.k.a. Skrillex and Diplo on "Where Are U Now" that went on to become a big hit, reaching No. 8 on Billboard Hot 100.
Just a few months after the collaboration with the EDM duo was released, Bieber scored his biggest single yet with his own song "What Do You Mean?". Not only did the track peak atop Hot 100, becoming only the 23rd single in the chart's history to debut at No. 1, but it also shattered Spotify's first-week record. The same record was broken by One Direction's "Drag Me Down" just weeks earlier.
"Mean" came as the first preview of Bieber's fourth album that's due out on November 13. The 21-year-old superstar has been working on the project with songwriter Jason Boyd a.k.a. Poo Bear who was also on a team behind 2013's "Journals".
Boyd shared some info about Bieber's upcoming yet-to-be-titled studio effort in a new interview with Rolling Stone. "It's incredible," he said. "And if I had to compare it to something, not the sound of it but the impact and amount of songs that are undeniable, I would have to compare it to [Michael Jackson's] 'Thriller'."
"We recorded a lot of songs, 103 songs, over the past couple of years," he continued, "just making sure that everything is in the direction we want to stay in, which is uplifting music, real-world music. This is so the world can understand: 'If you're going through what I went through, this is what I did to get through my problems.' Justin always wanted to be that light, that example. And we really hit it with this album."
"You'll get to hear him really get intimate with things that he went through in his life in the last couple of years, so that people can understand him, kind of like with 'Human Nature'," he added. "Big, powerful records that everyone can listen to. This album is so inspirational."
In addition to Boyd, Biebs has enlisted big names like Skrillex, Diplo, Kanye West and Rick Rubin among others for the album. "We just really wanted that influence - a hint of it to rub off on the music," Boyd explained. "I can't say that they played a huge role in the album, but it was just, like, pieces of them."
