The comedienne took on a challenging role as a secretly depressed mother who takes drastic measures to cope up with her problem.

AceShowbiz - Comedienne Sarah Silverman made a career-changing performance in "I Smile Back". The first trailer to the drama shows her as a depressed and self-destructive housewife and mother of two. "I'd love to smile like that again," Silverman said in the trailer.

The film centers on Laney, an attractive, intelligent suburban wife and devoted mother of two adorable children. She has the perfect husband, a pristine house, and a shiny SUV for carting the children to their next activity. However, just beneath the facade lie depression and disillusionment that send her careening into a secret world of reckless compulsion. Only very real danger will force her to face the painful root of her destructiveness and its crumbling effect on those she loves.

The movie was adapted from a novel by author Amy Koppelman, who also wrote the film's script with Paige Dylan. Adam Salky directed the indie drama which became a Sundance hit earlier this year. The film will be screened at Toronto Film Festival on Saturday, September 12 and in theaters nationwide on October 23.

"I think people will walk away from this movie having really varying ideas of who this woman is," Silverman said about the film. "They're going to like or hate or however they feel about this character informed by their own life experiences. People will walk out of it very empathetic or with no empathy at all, 'She's an a**hole.' Her worst fears are realized, pretty much as self-fulfilled prophecies, and do you have compassion for that or not? That depends on you and your experience with depression or addiction."
