Dennis Stock is a photojournalist who is assigned to cover Dean's story for Life magazine after meeting the actor in a 1953 party. Together they embark on a journey to Los Angeles, New York and Dean's hometown of Indiana, striking an improbable friendship during those three months.

Anton Corbijn of "A Most Wanted Man" directs the film from the script by Luke Davis. The scribe mainly refers to the book "Beautiful Enigma: LIFE With James Dean", which was written by Stock and was published in 2005.
