The sci-fi movie, which is adapted from a novel of the same name by Ernie Cline, will arrive in U.S. theaters on December 21, 2017.

AceShowbiz - Steven Spielberg is planning to make an adaptation based on a not-yet-released novel by Ernie Cline entitled "Ready Player One". The project has just got an official release date as Warner Bros., Village Roadshow and DreamWorks set the sci-fi movie for a December 15, 2017 release in U.S. theaters.

Spielberg, Donald De Line, Dan Farah and Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce the movie with Bruce Berman serving as executive producer. "Any film from Steven Spielberg is an event film, so it felt right to date this thrilling new project from one of our greatest filmmakers for the holiday season," Dan Fellman, Warner Bros.' president of domestic distribution, said in a statement.

Spielberg signed up to direct the sci-fi film in March. The movie will be his next project after he completes the production of "The BFG", his adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel. "Ready One Player" will mark the first time that Spielberg collaborates with Warner Bros. since he directed "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" in 2001.

Written by Zak Penn, "Ready One Player" centers on a teenager named Wade Watts who finds himself competing in a treasure hunt to get massive power and fortune. In the virtual utopia known as the OASIS, Watts has to unlock the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines to win the prize.
