Pharrell moves to dismiss Chad Hugo's royalties lawsuit over The Neptunes, calling claims vague and lacking key details on ownership and works.

AceShowbiz - Pharrell Williams is pushing to have a lawsuit filed by his former production partner, Chad Hugo, dismissed. The legal dispute concerns claims of unpaid royalties related to their work as the production duo The Neptunes.
In January, Chad Hugo initiated the lawsuit alleging that he has not received royalties owed to him from their joint compositions and sound recordings. Since then, the complaint has been amended several times. However, Pharrell’s legal team argues that the lawsuit is too vague and lacks crucial details.
On October 6, Pharrell’s attorneys submitted a 34-page motion to dismiss the case. They contend that Chad has failed to specify which copyrighted works he is claiming royalties for or provide supporting evidence of ownership. According to the motion, even after years of dispute and multiple filings, these fundamental facts remain unclear.
The motion emphasizes that despite Chad’s assertion of being present and involved throughout the production process, he has not identified any specific compositions or recordings he allegedly authored. This lack of clarity, Pharrell’s team argues, undermines the validity of the lawsuit and should prevent the case from proceeding to trial.
Beyond the copyright and royalty claims, Pharrell is also seeking dismissal of other allegations brought by Chad. These include breach of fiduciary duty, two accounting claims, and disputes relating to LLC operating agreements.
A hearing on Pharrell’s motion to dismiss is scheduled for November 6, where a judge will decide whether the case can move forward or be thrown out entirely.
This legal battle highlights ongoing tensions between the two producers behind some of hip-hop’s most influential hits. While Chad Hugo pursues compensation for purported unpaid royalties, Pharrell asserts that the claims lack sufficient detail and legal merit to continue.
