A new problem is surrounding Zayn Malik's relationship with his fiancee Perrie Edwards. The couple was urged to cancel their engagement after #CANCELYOURENGAGEMENTZAYN began trending on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon, July 7.
Though it's not clear who started the hashtag, tons of Zayn's fans responded to it with various comments. One hater mocked Zayn, writing, "Why does zayn have to get engaged to the white trash of all white people he deserves way better," while another added, "This is actually genius tbh."
However, more fans came to Zayn's defense and started another trending hashtag #RESPECTZAYN in response. One defender tweeted, "Yall so ugly this is why zayn left," and another candidly added, "I hate Perrie & i do not ship Zerrie but you can't trend things like this to hurt him you just have to respect it."
Another supporter noted, "Don't force Zayn to stop his engagement. It's his life. And we're not part of it anymore. Accept it." Another person commented, "This trend is a very good example why people think we're all a bunch of 12 year olds."
Though his fans went crazy due to the rude trending hashtag, Zayn appeared to be ignorant about it. The former One Direction singer took to his Twitter hours later to post a shirtless snap of himself. He followed up the post with a tweet that read, "Need the sunnies today."

Zayn and Perry got engaged two years ago. When Zayn departed One Direction, many fans blamed Perrie for Zayn's decision to quit the group. Last month, the pair were said getting married secretly after Perrie addressed herself as "Perrie Malik" in an Instagram video. However, it's later confirmed that the reports were untrue because at that time, Perrie only made fun of her Little Mix friend Jade Thirlwall who was single.
