Britney Spears and Charlie Ebersol reportedly almost got engaged before ending their romance. According to HollywoodLife, the "Oops!...I Did It Again" songstress' father Jamie Spears was the one behind the couple's split.

A source tells the site, "Britney and Charlie were a second away from becoming engaged."

She loved him and he loved her. Charlie was just a great guy. He was great to Britney and her two children [Sean, 9, and Jayden, 7]. He treated them all with love, kindness and respect. He seemed like The One."

"Britney, of course, talked to Jamie about it. She runs everything by him and values his opinion," the source adds about what halted Britney and Charlie's plans to get married. "Jamie didn't like the idea and convinced her not to go forward."

Reports of Britney and Charlie's split emerged on Monday, June 22 after she deleted every single photos of him from her Instagram. At that time, a source told Us Weekly of the reason behind the pair's separation, "I just felt that he was in it for the wrong reasons."

Charlie reportedly felt heartbroken following the split. A source told PEOPLE, "Charlie has been pretty torn up about all of this. He really thought she could be the one. He is a very private, family guy and saw Britney fitting right in."

According one of Charlie's relatives, during their relationship, "everyone thought he might end up asking her to marry him." The source added, "Charlie really put a lot into their relationship and took it very seriously, so when things ended he was definitely upset."
