Stephen Colbert quickly reacted to Donald Trump's presidential announcement. On Tuesday, June 16, Colbert mocked the wealthy businessman's announcement earlier that day for depicting America as a broken nation.
The 51-year-old comedian tried to resemble the tycoon's look. He sported a comb-over while speaking in a podium which bore his name and slogan "Shut up, Dummy!" Four American flags were put in the background. "Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to announce that I have an announcement to make," he said. "Donald Trump has announced he is running for president of the United States. Thank you."
"This will be the finest, most luxurious gold-plated, diamond-encrusted campaign that will give hope to a weary nation until together we reach that fine fall day when the new season of 'Celebrity Apprentice' premieres - and if elected, Trump will be in his own word, 'the greatest jobs president that God ever created,' " Colbert continued his hyperbolic speech.
Surprisingly, the former host of "The Colbert Report" related Trump's presidential announcement to his upcoming show, "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert". "Donald Trump's campaign for president of the United States is not just great for America, it's great for late-night television because Donald's presidential campaign has inspired me, Stephen Colbert to announce that I will still be hosting the 'Late Show' on CBS," he explained.
Colbert continued his satire dubbing America a "broken nation." He said, "As Donald said, I want to be, and he wants to be, a cheerleader for this broken nation." He later pointed out Trump's bizarre comment saying that he was the one who could bring American dream back. "I agree with Donald that America is dead," the "Strangers with Candy" star said. "Buried in a coffin, in salted earth with our enemies pissing on it and laughing. And Donald Trump is the only man who can - excuse me, I'm moved; I'm physically moved by the knowledge that Donald Trump is the only man who can dig up the corpse of that nation and marry it."
As he finished his speech and left the podium, he said, "September 8. September 8," to remind viewers that the new episode of "The Late Show" will start on that date.
