Elizabeth Banks is in negotiations to direct an adaptation of Victoria Aveyard's YA novel "Red Queen", sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Jake Weiner, Chris Bender, J.C. Spink of Benderspink, Pouya Shahbazian and Christopher Cosmos are producing the project with "Breaking Bad" writer Gennifer Hitchinson writing the script.

"Red Queen", which has shades of "The Hunger Games", "Game of Thrones", "X-Men" and "Cinderella", centers on a 17-year-old common girl who lives in a world with a caste system divided by blood. Red-blooded people are the commoners who serve the silver-blooded elites with supernatural abilities.

When the girl saves her best friend, she is brought before the king and queen at the Silver court where she suddenly displays special powers which is impossible for a red-blooded like her. The king then invents a past for the girl as a lost princess and sets her up to marry his son to hide the fact about her special powers. The girl later finds herself get into the dangerous intrigue of the king's palace.

Elizabeth made headlines after the success of "Pitch Perfect 2". The musical flick starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson opened with $70 million domestically, giving her the second-largest opening for a female director. It has grossed over $161 million domestically and more than $250 million worldwide.
