Danny Pino joined the show on season 13 along with Kelli Giddish as new detectives after Christopher Meloni's Elliot Stabler left. In the last episode of the season 15, [SPOILER ALERT!] Amaro was caught in the crossfire during a courtroom shootout that involved Charles Halford's Johnny D., the biological father of Benson's adopted son. He survived the attack but later decided to retire.
Benson's parting words to Amaro: "I grew more in the last four years with you than I did in the 12 years I was with [Stabler]. That relationship, whatever it was, didn't allow for anything else. But with you, with your support, I have a family. You helped me grow."
