Josh Boone to Direct 'X-Men' Spin-Off 'The New Mutants'

The 'Fault in Our Stars' director is on board to sit behind the lens and co-write a screenplay that will introduce a group of new mutants.

AceShowbiz - Fox is assembling a new group of mutants for "X-Men" spin-off movie. Josh Boone ("The Fault in Our Stars") is tapped to helm "The New Mutants" and co-write the script with Knate Gwaltney. Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner serve as producers.

In the comic books, "The New Mutants" is a diverse group of students from Professor X's School for Gifted Youngsters. The original team includes Brazilian Sunspot, Native American Mirage, Scots girl Wolfsbane, Vietnamese Karma, and a Kentuckian Cannonball.

"We're so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters," Kinberg said as quoted by Deadline.

It's unclear when the start date is, but Josh Boone is also attached to two other high profile projects; an adaptation of Anne Rice's "The Vampire Chronicles" for Universal and a movie based on Stephen King's "The Stand" for Warner Brothers.

In the meantime, "X-Men" will continue with "X-Men: Apocalypse" on May 27, 2016. It will introduce new mutants like Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Jubilee (Lana Condor), & Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), but it will mark Jennifer Lawrence's last appearance as Mystique.

Hugh Jackman who is one of the mainstays in the franchise will leave next after "The Wolverine 3" (March 3, 2017). Ryan Reynolds, meanwhile, will be introduced as new Deadpool on February 12, 2016 and Channing Tatum as Gambit on October 07, 2016.
