The first clip of Gus Van Sant's "The Sea of Trees" has arrived. It features Matthew McConaughey's character in a forest where he encounters a Japanese man played by Ken Watanabe.

According to Deadline, McConaughey stars as Arthur Brennan, an American man dealing with love and loss who wants to commit a suicide. He comes to "Suicide Forest", a forest near Mount Fuji in Japan which is well-known as a place to commit suicide. In the forest, he meets Takumi Nakamura (Watanabe) who also attempts suicide. The two men eventually team up to escape the forest and begin a journey of reflection and survival.

McConaughey and Watanabe star opposite Naomi Watts in the film written by Chris Sparling while Gil Netter is producing. It will mark McConaughey's first film with Oscar-nominated director Van Sant.

"The Sea of Trees" was launched as one of the hot projects in Cannes last year. And now, Van Sant returns to the competition after his 2007 "Paranoid Park" won the 60th Anniversary Prize. He previously scooped the Palme d'Or and directing award for "Elephant".
