David Bowie is bringing his iconic character from 1976's cult film "The Man Who Fell to Earth" to off-Broadway for 2015-2016 season. The musician has written new songs and reworked some previously-recorded material for the stage production.

In the classic Nicolas Roeg movie, Bowie played Thomas Jerome Newton who crash-lands on Earth while seeking water to save his dying home planet. The upcoming stage adaptation titled "Lazarus" is scheduled to debut at the New York Theater Workshop.

Instead of reprising his role, Bowie co-wrote the play along with Tony-winning playwright Enda Walsh ("Once") based on Walter Tevis' 1963 novel that inspired the movie version. Avant-garde Belgian director Ivo van Hove will helm the stage musical.

"It's going to be a play with characters and songs - I'm calling it music theater, but I don't really know what it's going to be like, I just have incredible trust in their creative vision," the theater's artistic director James C. Nicola told New York Times. "I'm really excited about it. These are three very different sensibilities to be colliding."
