Andy Fraser, who wrote classic rock song "All Right Now" with his 1970s band Free, has passed away at his home in Temecula, California on Monday, March 16. The cause of his death is still unknown pending investigation, but he had battled cancer and AIDS. He was 62 years old.
"A survivor of both cancer and AIDS, Andy was a strong social activist and defender of individual human rights," reads a statement regarding his death. "He leaves behind his daughters Hannah and Jasmine Fraser, and their mother Ri, his sister Gail, brothers Gavin and Alex, and many friends and associates in the industry."
Fraser traded classical piano with rock guitar in his early teens. He honed in his skills as a member of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers which was known as a training ground for British rockers like Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stones' Mick Taylor during their younger years.
The London-born bassist then played music with vocalist Paul Rodgers, drummer Simon Kirke, and guitarist Paul Kossoff. Their biggest hit "All Right Now" is still often played in U.S. stadiums before the games start.
After Free broke up, Fraser formed the band Sharks and later The Andy Fraser Band. Meanwhile, Rodgers who is ranked among the top rock singers of all time went on to front Bad Company and The Firm. The two once reunited at Woodstock '94 to play "All Right Now".
