Liam Hemsworth and Jessie Usher Officially Cast for 'Independence Day' Sequel

Usher is signed to star in the film as the central character, who is the son of Will Smith's Steven Hiller from the 1996 original movie.

AceShowbiz - It's official, Jessie Usher has been cast to star in the much anticipated flick "Independence Day 2". The hunk was the first name announced as the film's cast, with director Roland Emmerich breaking the news via his Facebook account.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Usher is slated to portray the son of Will Smith's Steven Hiller character from the 1996 original film. Smith himself will not be returning to the sequel despite the fact that his role in the first movie has helped catapult him to international fame.

In addition to Usher, Emmerich has just confirmed through a post on his Facebook that Liam Hemsworth and Jeff Goldblum have also been signed to star in the film. No words though on the characters they will be portraying.

"Independence Day 2" will be directed by Roland Emmerich, who also directed the first flick. Dean Devlin, Emmerich, and Harald Kloser are all on board producing the upcoming feature, slated for June 24, 2016 release date.

Jessie Usher is known for starring on the Starz series "Survivor's Remorse" as a basketball player who moves to Atlanta with his family. He, moreover, has starred in Sony's football drama "When the Game Stands Tall."
