The National Film Registry of the Library of Congress has named 25 titles which are deemed culturally significant to be preserved this year. Among the titles announced on Wednesday, December 17 are Steven Spielberg's 1998 WWII drama "Saving Private Ryan" starring Tom Hanks, Coen Brothers' "The Big Lebowski" and fantasy film "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" which was released in 1971.

Other notable works which are added this year include 1919's "The Dragon Painter", a silent film starring Sessue Hayakawa, and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" which stars Matthew Broderick. "House of Wax" (1953) which is believed to be the first full-length 3-D color film ever produced and released by a U.S. major studio is also included in this year's list.

"The National Film Registry showcases the extraordinary diversity of America's film heritage and the disparate strands making it so vibrant," read a statement from James H. Billington, the Librarian of Congress. "By preserving these films, we protect a crucial element of American creativity, culture and history."

Each year, the Librarian of Congress chooses 25 titles to be preserved. The works, which are deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant, must be at least 10 years old.
