The cast of HBO's "The Leftovers" will shrink in the second season. The drama thriller will be going through a creative reboot for its sophomore year, shedding a large portion of the fourteen regular cast members who are in supporting roles.
Deadline reported that some of the regulars won't be returning for season 2 as the setting is moved from the fictional town of Mapleton, New York to a new location. It's unclear at this point which characters are benched but most of the leads such as Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman, Margaret Qualley, Chris Zylka, Carrie Coon, and Christopher Eccleston are poised to return.
Meanwhile, other major characters played by Liv Tyler and Ann Dowd are expected to make returns as well but not so regular. The first season pretty much covered all about the Sudden Departure in Tom Perotta's 2011 novel. Writers are eager to take viewers outside Mapleton to see what happened to the others.
The second season will debut next year. "We are thrilled to bring back The Leftovers for a second season with the exceptional talents of [creators] Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta," HBO said upon renewing the drama. "It has been truly exciting to see the overwhelming response to their provocative and original storytelling."
