Miss Honduras Maria Jose Alvarado and her sister Sofia who went missing last week have been found dead. According to local officials, the bodies were found buried in a riverbank in Santa Barbara, Honduras on early Wednesday, November 19.

"I can confirm that the Alvarado sisters were found ... We also have the murder weapon and the vehicle in which they were transported to the site where they were buried," said the head of the criminal investigation unit Leandro Osorio as quoted by Reuters.

According to The Associated Press, Honduras' National Police director Gen. Ramon Sabillon said that Sofia's boyfriend Plutarco Ruiz confessed to killing Maria and Sofia and led the police to the location. An accomplice named Aris Maldonado was also arrested.

The sisters apparently were shot dead on the night they went missing due to jealousy after Plutarco saw his girlfriend dancing with another man. According to Sabillon, Plutarco had a heated argument with Sofia on November 13 which led him to the shooting. The 19-year-old Maria, who tried to flee, was shot twice on the back.

Maria disappeared just a few days before she was supposed to fly to London to prepare for the Miss World pageant. Chairman of the Miss World Organisation Julia Morley said they were "devastated by this terrible loss of two young women who were so full of life." Honduras' pageant organizer Eduardo Zablah said the country would not take part at the upcoming event which final round is set to take place on December 14.
