AceShowbiz - Shailene Woodley is in contention to play the female lead in "The Snowden Files", The Hollywood Reporter learns. The "Divergent" heroine is expected to join Joseph Gordon-Levitt who is already confirmed to play the NSA whistleblower in a true-story pic directed by Oliver Stone.
The film is based on two source materials; a nonfiction book "The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man" by The Guardian journalist Luke Harding and an upcoming novel "Time of the Octopus" by Snowden's Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena.
"The Snowden Files" follows Snowden as he moved from Hawaii to Hong Kong and handed over top-secret NSA documents to documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald before he sought asylum in Moscow. "Time of the Octopus", meanwhile, is based on Kucherena's time with Snowden at the Moscow airport before the Russian government granted him the asylum.
A rival project is also developed by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who are known for producing James Bond films like "Skyfall" and "Quantum of Solace". The film will be based on a book called "No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA and the U. S. Surveillance State" by Greenwald who earned a Pulitzer Prize for his efforts to help expose NSA.
