"Joe Dirt 2" is officially announced. David Spade is set to reprise his role as the titular character. The actor also co-writes the script for the sequel, reuniting with Fred Wolf who will serve behind the lens as well.
Production begins mid-November on a location in Louisiana, the backdrop of the Baton Rouge based on the original feature film. Instead of hitting theaters, the movie will be released via Sony Pictures' streaming video service Crackle in 2015.
The plot is still under wraps, but the second movie is confirmed to pick up where the first film left off, following the comedic misadventures of the mullet-clad, lovable redneck Joe Dirt.
"I'm beyond stoked that 'Joe Dirt' will finally hit the screens again on Crackle," Spade said. "I've been sleeping in this wig for years and it will be nice to wear it in the daytime again."
"David Spade had a fresh and unique vision for 'Joe Dirt 2' that he could have brought anywhere and we couldn't be happier that he brought it to Crackle for a first-of-its-kind, worldwide release," said Eric Berger from Crackle.
