The family of Malcolm Young, the newly retired AC/DC co-founder and guitarist, confirmed to PEOPLE on Tuesday, September 30 that he's suffering from dementia. Malcolm's family said in a statement, "Malcolm is suffering from dementia and the family thanks you for respecting their privacy."

Previous report said that Malcolm was moved into full-time care in a nursing home facility in Sydney. Sources close to Malcolm's family said at that time, "If you were in the room with [Malcolm Young] and walked out, then came back in one minute later, he wouldn't remember who you are. He has a complete loss of short-term memory. His wife, Linda, has put him in full-time care."

AC/DC announced Malcolm's retirement along with the announcement of their new album on their official website on September 24. "Earlier this year AC/DC released a statement explaining that due to illness, Malcolm would be taking a break from the band," the statement read, "Unfortunately, due to the nature of Malcolm's condition, he will not be returning to the band."

The statement continued, "Stevie Young, nephew of founding members Angus and Malcolm Young, plays rhythm guitar on 'Rock or Bust' and will accompany the band on tour."

AC/DC will drop their 17th studio album titled "Rock or Bust" on December 2.
