"The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" has unintentionally waged war with One Direction Army. The Comedy Central show made a terrorist joke about a member of the boyband without mentioning a name and it has made the group's loyal devotees furious.
During the Tuesday's (September 23) episode of the comedy show, correspondent Jessica Williams reported to Jon Stewart in a segment about terrorist, "Just as you were talking, a new terrorist group has formed, with one member each from ISIS, Al Nusra, Al Qaeda, Hamas, One Direction and the Zetas drug cartel."
Fans jumped to the conclusion that "The Daily Show" labeled Zayn Malik, who is Muslim, a terrorist. Since then, such hashtags as "#TheDailyShowGoneTooFar", "#ZaynDefenseSquad", "#ZaynIsTheMostAmazingHumanBeing" and "#ZaynSavesNotKills" have became trending topics on Twitter.
"Zayn is not a 'terrorist' so if you mess with him you mess with the directioners! So good luck guys! #TheDailyShowGoneTooFar," a fan wrote on the social media. Another tweeted, "#TheDailyShowGoneTooFar tf you seriously? Do you know what you're talking about? You can't just call someone a terrorist just bc he's muslim."
Comedy Central has not released an official statement regarding the controversy, but the show's crew seemingly takes it light. After the joke sparked backlashes, the show updated their Twitter account with a tweet which read, "Dear 1D fans: We didn't know the band members' names, religions, hobbies, etc. Just knew they were popular. But not THIS popular. #whoa."
Still, many didn't accept the excuse with one commenting on the post, "@TheDailyShow wow what a pathetic excuse." Another replied, "@TheDailyShow well do your fucking research first."
