Following news that police wrongly detained "Django Unchained" actress Daniele Watts, the LAPD released a statement on Sunday, September 14 to address the issue. Watts and her partner Brian James Lucas previously shared on Facebook that she was detained and handcuffed on Thursday, September 11 after the couple shared a kiss in public.
In the statement, the law enforcement office explained that the officers went to the 11900 block of Ventura Boulevard at around 3 P.M. that day following a report of an indecent exposure. "The citizen who called the police to complain told the 9-1-1 operator that a male and a female were involved in indecent exposure inside a Silver Mercedes with the vehicle door open," they said.
"The responding sergeant and police officers located two individuals that matched the description of the suspects, and they were briefly detained. Upon further investigation it was determined that no crime had been committed. Ms. Watts and her companion were subsequently released," the statement continued. "An internal complaint investigation has been initiated regarding this matter."
Lucas said in his post that the actress, who has appeared on "How I Met Your Mother", "Criminal Minds" and "Castle" among others, was mistaken for a prostitute and he was her client. "I put my hands behind my back and I just stood there - you guys came and grabbed me," a visibly upset Watts said in a video, telling an officer they were arresting her "for no reason."
