'Pretty Little Liars': 'A's' Latest Victim Will Return in Flashbacks

A major character was killed off in the summer finale of the show's season 5 as Aria was close to finding out who 'A' really is.

A major character fell victim to "A's" latest cruelty in the summer finale of "Pretty Little Liars" season 5. In the latest episode, the girls' tormentor managed to keep his/her identity safe before it spread by killing [SPOILER ALERT!] Mona Vanderwaal.

Mona was once someone whom the Liars suspected to be "A." In the most recent episode, she turned into an unlikely ally for the girls. She knew that Ali was "A" and was about to spill the beans to Aria as they were talking on the phone when someone attacked Mona from behind.

Her body was not at the scene when police arrived. Mona's lifeless body was seen in the trunk of a car.

Janel Parrish, who plays Mona, confirmed her character's fate. He tweeted after the episode aired on Tuesday, August 26, "MONA MURDERED. Yep. It's true :( Don't worry guys! I'm still gonna be on the show in flashbacks!!!! #PLLChat."

Executive producer Marlene King told The Hollywood Reporter before the episode aired that the death had been in the works for "more than a year." She said, "I have goosebumps even telling you this - fans are going to be left speechless. I think it's one of those where, even people here who have seen the episode who work on the show, their jaws hit the floor. Tissue boxes were out; people were crying."
