Sean Sasser, the former star of "The Real World: San Francisco", has died at the age of 44. Judd Winick, who appeared alongside Sasser on the MTV reality television series, announced the sad news on Twitter.
"Our friend Sean Sasser has died. Our love goes out to his family & husband Michael. We will miss u so much," Winick wrote on Thursday, August 8. Winick also posted a collage photo of Sasser.
Sasser, who was HIV positive and AIDS activist, died of a rare form of lung cancer called mesothelioma, his partner Michael Kaplan said. No other information was released immediately about Sasser's medical condition, but mesothelioma has been linked to a weakened immune system in some people with AIDS.
Sasser became known for his relationship with the late Pedro Zamora, his "The Real World: San Francisco" co-star. The couple got married before Zamora, who was also HIV positive and AIDS educator, passed away back in 1994.
Last May, the Washington Blade reported that Sasser was working as a pastry chef at RIS restaurant in Washington D.C.. "I want to serve desserts and pastries that people recognize and love to eat," he told the newspaper. "But sometimes with an unexpected twist of surprise."
