Antonio Banderas has landed a leading role in "The 33", an upcoming film from director Patricia Riggen which is based on a true story of a mining accident in Chile in 2010. Variety learns that the Zorro depicter is set to portray the role of Mario Sepulveda, a charismatic miner known as "Super Mario".

The feature will dramatize the events of the 33 miners' struggle for survival after having been trapped underground for 69 days and the international effort to rescue them. The emotional rescue drew over 1 billion viewers worldwide. Martin Sheen and Rodrigo Santoro join Banderas in supporting roles.

Making the announcement at Cannes on Sunday, May 19, Mike Medavoy serves as co-producer alongside Ed McGurn for the film, which is set to start filming this fall in Chile. Medavoy previously produced Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" and Darren Aronofsky's critically-acclaimed "Black Swan".

Banderas is included in the star-studded cast ensemble of Terrence Mallick's film "Knight of Cups", which has recently unveiled its first photo featuring Natalie Portman and Christian Bale.

The Spanish actor will voice Sir Clorex in "Justin and the Knights of Valour" and jump into action in "Machete Kills", a film from director Robert Rodriguez which marks Lady GaGa's big-screen debut.
