Brad Pitt hasn't escaped the "Sherlock Holmes" casting speculation. Although Warner Bros. Pictures was quick to squash that the actor is taking the role of Holmes' nemesis Moriarty, a new report has come in suggesting that "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" star is in talks, not for the first film, but rather for a possible sequel.
The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Business blog broke out the story that Warners is planning to develop "Sherlock Holmes 2" and 45-year-old Pitt has had discussions with producers to carry on the villain role in this new installment. Though so, it is noted that there is no deal in place for him to take the part just yet.
Back in mid-August, Warners was forced to come out with a statement denying Pitt's involvement with "Sherlock Holmes" after The Mirror reported the "Inglourious Basterds" leading man has come aboard the film as Moriarty at the behest of director Guy Ritchie. "The report in today's London Mirror is completely inaccurate. Brad Pitt is not joining the cast of Sherlock Holmes and we're extremely pleased with the production of the film," the statement read.
While the studio slammed the brewing speculation, Ritchie confirmed that Moriarty will be involved in his forthcoming action drama though he didn't mention anything about Pitt taking the role. "Some kind of an appearance is probably the best way to describe it," he told MTV. Pressed further if an actor is credited for the villainous role, he said, "I believe not. I don't know how to answer that other than to say there is some kind of appearance."
The first "Sherlock Holmes" is based on Lionel Wigram's upcoming comic book and will present a new portrayal of Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous characters. Due for December 25 U.S. release, it has Robert Downey Jr. as the titular character, Jude Law as Dr. John Watson, and Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler, Holmes' love interest, in addition to Mark Strong who is set to play Lord Blackwood.
As for the potential sequel, Warners reportedly eyes to bring Kieran and Michele Mulroney, the scribes who are penning its "Justice League Mortal", to work on a draft for the second film. There is a chance that Downey Jr. and Law may return to reprise their roles.
