The 62nd Cannes Film Festival has played host to the premiere of "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus". On Friday, May 22, the movie that sees the final performance of late actor Heath Ledger got a red carpet treatment at Grand Theatre Lumiere in Cannes, France, celebrating its first time screening.
For the special occasion, director Terry Gilliam was joined by several cast members, including Andrew Garfield, Lily Cole and Verne Troyer, as well as producers Samuel Hadida and Amy Gilliam. None of the three actors sharing Ledger's role as Tony in the film, Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell, were spotted on the red carpet.
Screened at the festival as one of the Out of Competition movies, "Imaginarium" ended with a special dedication to the late star that read "A film from Heath Ledger and friends". Prior to the premiere, Terry revealed that after Heath's tragic death early last year, he planned to scrap the picture altogether, but was encouraged to finish it in the actor's memory. "Fortunately, I was surrounded by really good people who insisted that I shouldn't be such a lazy bastard," he said.
Set in the present day, "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" tells the story of Dr Parnassus and his extraordinary 'Imaginarium'. Making deals with the devil long time ago which gives him immortality, he is cursed with a dark secret that jeopardizes his daughter's freedom. Desperate to protect his daughter from her impending fate, he must now find a man that will help him undo the mistakes of his past once and for all. It is yet to get any release date set, though eyeing a 2009 release.
