The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is changing the formats of this year's Primetime Emmy Awards by adding more chances for TV programs and stars to be the contenders. If traditionally each category consists of five nominees, this year, one more will compete for the prize in 10 top categories.

Those categories taking six nominees underneath are among others, Best Drama and Comedy, Best Actor and Actress as well as Best Supporting Actor and Actress. The change announced on Wednesday, February 4 is intended to accommodate "an abundance of outstanding programs and performances".

While final voting process is unchanged, the two phase nominating process that has just been put on practice is also dropped. The nominees for the 2008-09 season will be announced on July 16.
