Set in 1962 Baltimore, "Hairspray Live!" is a vibrant musical that follows the spirited teenager Tracy Turnblad, played by Maddie Baillio, as she dreams of dancing on the popular local television show, The Corny Collins Show. When she unexpectedly wins a spot on the program, Tracy becomes a local celebrity, but her joy is tempered by the show's rigid segregation policy. Refusing to accept the status quo, she teams up with her friend Seaweed, portrayed by Garrett Clayton, and a host of colorful characters, including her eccentric mother Edna, brought to life by Harvey Fierstein, and the formidable Motormouth Maybelle, played by Jennifer Hudson. With the help of her father Wilbur, played by Martin Short, and facing off against the show's scheming producer, Velma Von Tussle, played by Kristin Chenoweth, Tracy rallies her community to integrate the show. This live television event features a star-studded cast including Ariana Grande as Penny Pingleton, Dove Cameron as Amber Von Tussle, and Derek Hough as Corny Collins, delivering a high-energy, heartfelt celebration of unity and the power of standing up for what is right. With its infectious songs and joyful choreography, the production captures the spirit of the beloved original while adding a fresh, contemporary energy.
