Set against the sun-drenched landscape of 1960s Western Australia, this vibrant musical comedy follows the journey of Willie, a cheeky Aboriginal teenager played by Rocky McKenzie, who flees his strict Catholic boarding school in Perth to return home to his beloved mother in Broome. Along the way, he is joined by his lovable, hard-drinking Uncle Tadpole, portrayed by Ernie Dingo, as they embark on a hilarious and heartfelt road trip filled with catchy songs and colorful characters. Their path is complicated by a zealous and bumbling priest, played with comedic flair by Geoffrey Rush, who is determined to bring Willie back to the mission. As Willie navigates the challenges of his journey, he also finds himself torn between his childhood sweetheart, played by Jessica Mauboy, and the allure of a free-spirited hippie. With a toe-tapping soundtrack and a spirit of joyful resilience, Rachel Perkins’s film is a sun-drenched celebration of Indigenous Australian culture, family, and the enduring power of love, all while gently poking fun at authority and the absurdities of colonialism.
