Merchant of Venice, The

Drama Comedy

Set in the lavish era of 16th century Venice, Shakespeare's most powerful play comes to bear in Michael Radford's THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, which follows the interlocking lives of a captivating assortment of classic Shakespearean characters.

Bassanio (Joseph Fiennes) is the typical Elizabethan lover and aristocrat ?young, impulsive and romantic ?whose lavish lifestyle has left him deep in debt and desperately in love with the fair Portia (Lynn Collins) of Belmont. But to win her hand, he must prove his worth. To prove his worth, he must not only raise money he doesn't have, but he must also correctly solve the riddle of matrimony bequeathed by Portia's late father.

Determined to call Portia his bride, Bassanio employs the support of his dear friend Antonio (Jeremy Irons), a successful merchant residing in Venice. But with no word from his trading fleet, Antonio is short of resources and must use his credit for a loan. This loan comes in the form of Shylock (Al Pacino), a Jewish loan shark who, like all his people, is forced to live in "ghettoes" and has limited access to the city.

Yet, all is not as it appears between Antonio and Shylock. Antonio has publicly denounced Shylock and other Jews for their practice of usury (loaning money at exorbitant rates of interest), and consistently hurts their business by offering loans with no interest. This set of circumstances, along with the persecution of Jews at the time, has made Shylock spiteful towards Antonio, who jumps at the chance to have the merchant in his debt.

However, this time Shylock decides to offer his loan at no interest; instead, he demands a pound of flesh from Antonio if his loan is not repaid on time. Confident that Bassanio will return his good fortune three times over, Antonio agrees to the unusual terms.

As Bassanio travels to Belmont with Gratiano (Kris Marshall) to woo his beloved, other events threaten to ruin his quest before it is fulfilled. Portia, in the company of her lady-in-waiting Nerissa (Heather Goldenhersh), has already been welcoming potential suitors, who at any time could solve the mystery of her father's will which states that she must marry the man who correctly chooses one of three caskets.

Then Antonio's trade ships fail to produce any profit for the merchant. And, Shylock's daughter Jessica (Zuleikha Robinson) impulsively elopes with Bassanio's friend Lorenzo (Charlie Cox); in the process, she escapes with a fair amount of her father's personal wealth. This shatters Shylock to the core and causes him to focus all his energy on the repayment of the debt, almost taking out a lifetime of discrimination on the merchant.

Upon hearing of his friend's set of circumstances, Bassanio leaves Belmont and rushes home to find a solution to Antonio's predicament. But before Bassanio can arrive home, the loan is declared in default and the distraught and semi-deranged Shylock demands his pound of flesh from Antonio in order to fully seek his revenge.

The Duke (Anton Rodgers), the reigning power in the city, has called a legal expert to the court to proceed over these extraordinary hearings ?is Antonio truly in default on his loan? Is the payment that Shylock is asking for justified? Can Bassanio return in time to save Antonio? In true Shakespearean fashion, all is not as it seems in a story wrought with morality, revenge, redemption and love.

Message from President Trump (Archived) March 10th, 2032. Uncut 720p version.

Drama

In this unsettling and eerily prescient short drama, director and star [c=Dawson Fryzel] presents a chillingly plausible glimpse into a future that feels disturbingly close at hand. The film opens on a grainy, archived video file titled for March 10th, 2032, presenting itself as an uncut, 720p recording of a national address. The central figure is a weathered and determined [c=Donald Trump], who, from the iconic Resolute Desk, delivers a message that is both familiar and alien, a final plea or perhaps a warning to a fractured nation. As the President speaks, his words are framed by the quiet tension of the room, where aides, played by [c=Charlie Green] and [c=Dan Liptski], exchange loaded glances, their silent reactions painting a picture of a country on the brink. The film masterfully blurs the line between archive and fiction, using its brief four-minute runtime to craft a dense, atmospheric meditation on legacy, power, and the weight of a single, potentially history-altering statement. This is not a political thriller of action, but one of stark, uncomfortable stillness, forcing the viewer to lean in and listen to every syllable of a message that may change everything.

Message to Ezra

In this brief but haunting experimental film, co-directed by [c=Margot Atchinson] and [c=Vivian Maxson Landis], a solitary figure finds themselves trapped in a loop of fragmented memory and unresolved grief. The narrative centers on a woman who receives a cryptic, unfinished message from a loved one named Ezra, a name that echoes through disjointed scenes of urban isolation and quiet domestic spaces. As she pieces together the emotional weight of the communication, the film blurs the line between reality and subjective recollection, exploring how a single message can ripple through time. The central conflict is internal, as the protagonist wrestles with the urge to hold onto the past versus the necessity of moving forward. With a tone that is both melancholic and meditative, the directors use a tight three-minute runtime to craft a poignant, abstract meditation on loss, connection, and the fragments we leave behind. The result is an intimate, atmospheric short that lingers long after its final frame.

Metropolitan Opera: Il Trovatore Live Times, The

Musical

Part 1: The Duel
Spain is torn apart by civil war. The commander of the Royalist Aragon troops, Count di Luna, is obsessed with Leonora, a young noblewoman in the queen's service, who does not return his love. Outside the royal residence his soldiers keep watch at night. An unknown troubadour has been heard serenading Leonora and the jealous count is determined to capture and punish him. To keep his troops awake, the captain, Ferrando, recounts the terrible story of a Gypsy woman who was burned at the stake years ago for bewitching the count's infant brother. The Gypsy's daughter then took revenge by kidnapping the boy and-so the story goes-throwing him into the flames where her mother had died. The charred skeleton of a baby was discovered there and di Luna's father died of grief soon after. No trace was ever found of the Gypsy's daughter, but di Luna, always hoping that the remains might not have been his brother's, has sworn to find her.

In the palace gardens Leonora confesses to her companion that she is in love with a mysterious man she met before the outbreak of the war. It is he who now returns as the troubadour to serenade her each night. After they have left, Count di Luna appears, looking for Leonora. The troubadour's song is heard in the darkness and Leonora rushes out to greet him but is seized instead by di Luna. The troubadour reveals his true identity: he is Manrico, leader of the partisan rebel forces. Furious, the count challenges him to fight to the death.

Part 2: The Gypsy
The duel has been fought. Manrico overpowered the count but some instinct stopped him from killing his rival. The war has raged on with the Royalist forces victorious in the last battle. Manrico has been badly wounded and nursed back to health by his mother, the Gypsy Azucena, in a camp in the mountains.

Azucena is the woman di Luna has been looking for. Her life is scarred by the memory of her mother's death and the terrible revenge she exacted. Manrico, who has never heard the full story, is determined to finally know the truth. Azucena tells him how she stole the count's infant son but that the child she murdered in her manic rage was in fact her own. When Manrico demands to know who he truly is, Azucena is evasive: all that matters is the love of a mother she has shown him all his life and that he does not fail to take revenge on the house of di Luna. A messenger arrives with news of Leonora. Believing Manrico has died in battle, and to escape the grasp of di Luna, she is entering a convent. Azucena pleads with Manrico to stay, but he resolves to go to her immediately.

Di Luna arrives at the convent with his troops to take Leonora by force, but his attempt to seize her is foiled by the attack of Manrico and his men. In the ensuing fight, the lovers escape.

Part 3: The Gypsy's Son
Di Luna has laid siege to the fortress where Manrico has taken refuge with Leonora. Azucena, who has been captured by Ferrando wandering nearby, is brought into the camp. When she hears di Luna's name, her reaction arouses suspicion and Ferrando recognizes her as the murderer of the count's brother. Azucena cries out to Manrico to rescue her and di Luna realizes he now has his enemy in his hands. He orders a pyre built to burn Azucena before the walls of the fortress.

Inside the castle, Manrico and Leonora are preparing to be married. She is frightened, but he assures her of his love even in the face of death. When news of Azucena's capture arrives, he summons his men and prepares to attack.

Part 4: The Execution
Manrico's army has been defeated and he and Azucena are being held captive in di Luna's castle. Leonora has escaped and now comes to the prison to pray for Manrico's salvation. When di Luna orders the execution of Manrico and Azucena at sunrise, Leonora offers herself to the count in return for her lover's life and secretly takes a slow-acting poison.

Manrico tries to comfort Azucena, who is terrified by visions of the stake and the fire that awaits her. Leonora appears to tell Manrico that he is saved and urges him to escape. He understands what she has done and furiously denounces her, refusing di Luna's mercy. But the poison is already taking effect and Leonora dies in his arms, just as di Luna arrives. He sends Manrico to his execution. Metropolitan Opera: Tannhauser Live, The

Musical

Act I
Wartburg castle and environs, medieval Germany. The minnesinger Tannhauser, having spent a year in the magical underground realm of Venus, the goddess of love, longs to return to the human world. He pays tribute to Venus in a song but ends by asking her to let him go. Surprised, Venus promises him even greater pleasures, but when he insists and repeats his pleas, she furiously dismisses him and curses his desire for salvation. Tannhauser cries out that his hope rests with the Virgin Mary-and suddenly finds himself transported to a valley near the castle of the Wartburg.

A procession of pilgrims passes on the way to Rome. Tannhauser is deeply moved and praises the wonders of God, as horns announce the arrival of a hunting party. It is Landgrave Hermann with his knights. Recognizing Tannhauser as their long-lost friend, they beg him to return to the castle with them, but Tannhauser is reluctant. Wolfram, one of the knights, reminds him that his singing once won him the love of Elisabeth, the Landgrave's niece. On hearing her name, Tannhauser understands what he must do and joins his companions.

Act II
Elisabeth joyfully greets the Wartburg's Hall of Song, which she hasn't set foot in since Tannhauser left. He is now led in by Wolfram. Elisabeth, at first shy and confused, tells Tannhauser how she has suffered in his absence, but then joins him in praise of love. Observing their emotional reunion, Wolfram realizes that his own affection for Elisabeth is hopeless.

Landgrave Hermann is delighted to find his niece in the Hall of Song, and together they welcome their guests who have come for a song contest. The Landgrave declares love the subject of the competition and promises the victor to receive whatever he asks from the hand of Elisabeth. Wolfram opens the contest with a heartfelt tribute to idealized love. Tannhauser, his thoughts still on Venus, replies with a hymn to worldly pleasures. Other singers counter his increasingly passionate declarations until Tannhauser breaks out into his prize song to Venus, to the horror of the guests. As the men draw their swords, Elisabeth throws herself between the parties to protect Tannhauser and begs the knights for mercy. The Landgrave pronounces his judgment: Tannhauser will be forgiven if he joins the pilgrims on their way to Rome to do penance. Tannhauser falls at Elisabeth's feet and rushes from the hall.

Act III
Several months later, Wolfram comes across Elisabeth praying at a shrine in the valley. A band of pilgrims, back from Rome, passes by, but Tannhauser is not among them. Broken with grief, Elisabeth prays to the Virgin Mary to receive her soul into heaven. Wolfram gazes after her and asks the evening star to guide her way. Night falls, and a solitary pilgrim approaches. It is Tannhauser, ragged and weary. He tells Wolfram of his devout penitence on the way to Rome-of his joy at seeing so many others pardoned, and of his despair when the Pope proclaimed that he could no more be forgiven for his sins than the papal staff bear green leaves again. Left without hope, all he wants now is to return to Venus. He summons her and she appears, just as Wolfram once again brings Tannhauser to his senses by invoking Elisabeth's name. At this moment, Elisabeth's funeral procession comes winding down the valley. With a cry, Venus disappears. Tannhauser implores Elisabeth to pray for him in heaven and collapses dead. As dawn breaks, another group of pilgrims arrives, telling of a miracle: the Pope's staff, which they bear with them, has blossomed.
