Steve Jordan is an American drummer and music producer whose career has spanned more than four decades across television, session work, and some of the most celebrated acts in popular music. Born on January 14, 1957, in New York City, Jordan built a reputation as one of the most versatile and in-demand drummers of his generation, eventually becoming a member of the Rolling Stones.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Jordan was a member of the house bands for the television shows Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman, placements that showcased his adaptability across wildly different musical formats. In the early 1980s, he joined the band Eyewitness alongside bandleader Steve Khan on guitar, Anthony Jackson on bass, and Manolo Badrena on percussion, a collaboration that highlighted his fluency in jazz and fusion styles.
Since the mid-1980s, Jordan has been a member of the X-Pensive Winos, the side project of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. His partnership with Richards extended well beyond performance, as the two became production and songwriting collaborators on many of Richards' solo works, cementing Jordan's dual identity as both a player and a creative force behind the boards.
In 2005, Jordan became a member of the John Mayer Trio, joining John Mayer and bassist Pino Palladino for a project that brought his drumming to a new generation of listeners. He also formed the band the Verbs, which he fronts with his wife, Meegan Voss, demonstrating his range as a bandleader in his own right.
On August 5, 2021, it was reported that longtime Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts had elected to sit out the resumption of the US No Filter Tour due to a heart procedure, and Jordan was named as his temporary replacement. Following Watts' death later that year, Jordan continued to play with the Stones both live and in the studio, stepping into one of the most storied roles in rock music. His career stands as a testament to decades of disciplined musicianship, from late-night television pits to the world's biggest stages.
