Edgar Howard Wright, born on 18 April 1974, is an English filmmaker celebrated for his fast-paced, kinetic, and satirical genre films that have left an indelible mark on modern cinema. Known for his distinctive visual style, Wright employs extensive use of expressive popular music, Steadicam tracking shots, dolly zooms, and a signature editing approach filled with transitions, whip pans, and wipes. He first ventured into filmmaking with independent short films before making his feature debut with A Fistful of Fingers in 1995. Wright then created and directed the comedy series Asylum in 1996, written with David Walliams, and after directing several other television projects, he helmed the beloved sitcom Spaced from 1999 to 2001, which aired for two series and starred his frequent collaborators Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
In 2004, Wright achieved international recognition with the zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead, starring Pegg and Frost, which became the first installment in his acclaimed Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy. Co-written with Pegg, the film was a critical and commercial success, blending horror and humour in a fresh way. Wright and Pegg continued their collaboration with the buddy cop comedy Hot Fuzz in 2007 and the science fiction comedy The World’s End in 2013, completing the trilogy. In 2010, Wright co-wrote and directed the action comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, an adaptation of the graphic novel series that showcased his energetic style and became a cult favourite. He also contributed to the screenplay for The Adventures of Tintin (2011) alongside Joe Cornish and Steven Moffat for director Steven Spielberg.
Wright’s career took a notable turn when he co-wrote the screenplay for the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Ant-Man (2015) with Cornish, having initially been attached to direct before departing due to creative differences. He returned to directing with the critically acclaimed action film Baby Driver (2017), a high-octane heist movie driven by a meticulously curated soundtrack, which earned him widespread praise and several award nominations. Wright later explored documentary filmmaking with The Sparks Brothers (2021), a tribute to the band Sparks, and ventured into psychological horror with Last Night in Soho (2021), a stylish and unsettling thriller. He is set to release the action film The Running Man in 2025, further cementing his reputation as a visionary filmmaker with a unique voice in contemporary cinema.
