Growing up in a close-knit Italian-American family with four older sisters—Grace, Mary, Maddalena, and Lisa—Valastro was immersed in a rich cultural heritage that would heavily influence his culinary style. He attended Ridgefield Park High School and supplemented his education with baking courses at the Bergen County Technical High School in Teterboro, laying the technical groundwork for his future career.

Valastro’s professional journey began at the tender age of 11, when he started working at his family’s business, Carlo's Bakery, alongside his father. The tragic passing of his father in 1994, when Valastro was just 17, thrust him into the role of lead baker and manager far earlier than anticipated. He took over the reins of the bakery with a fierce determination to honor his father’s legacy, and under his leadership, Carlo's Bakery evolved from a beloved local institution in Hoboken into a nationally recognized brand with multiple locations across the United States and even international outposts.
