Be Your Own Pet Biography

news-detailsBe Your Own Pet emerged from the Nashville underground in the mid-2000s as a ferocious burst of youthful punk energy, capturing the chaotic spirit of garage rock with a distinctly modern edge. Formed in 2003 by teenagers Jemina Pearl (vocals), Jonas Stein (guitar), Nathan Vasquez (bass), and John Eatherly (drums), the band quickly became local favorites, channeling the raw power of predecessors like The Stooges and The Ramones through their own frenetic lens. Their early singles and EPs on the Nashville-based Infinity Cat Recordings label built a formidable buzz, leading to a major label deal with XL Recordings and Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace/Universal Records.

The band's self-titled debut album arrived in 2006 to significant critical acclaim, with publications like NME and Pitchfork praising its unhinged vitality and Pearl's confrontational, charismatic delivery. Standout singles like "Adventure" and "Bunk, Trunk, Skunk" became anthems of the era, solidifying their reputation as one of the most exciting new rock acts. They followed this success in 2008 with "Get Awkward," an album that sharpened their songwriting while retaining their signature aggression. However, the pressures of the industry, combined with misogyny directed at Pearl, took a heavy toll. Shortly after the album's release, the group disbanded, leaving behind a potent but brief legacy.

After a fourteen-year hiatus, the unexpected catalyst for their return came from an iconic figure in their hometown music scene. In 2021, Jack White personally requested the band to open several dates on his Supply Chain Issues Tour. This reunion reignited their creative spark, leading them to sign with White's Third Man Records, co-owned by Pearl's husband, Ben Swank. The reunion proved to be more than a nostalgic trip, culminating in the release of their third studio album, "Mommy," on August 25, 2023. The record marked a triumphant and mature return, showcasing a band that had evolved while losing none of the visceral impact that first made them famous. Be Your Own Pet continues to perform, demonstrating that their particular brand of punk rock rebellion remains as vital as ever.
